I was looking for the Lyric sheet for Rachel Fuller's "Just Breathe" song on the internet and couldn't find it; So I just found this video and put on some headphones and transcribed. I believe it was Martha Graham who said that "All movement is initiated from the breath," and I've been doing Contact Improvisation for some years now and noticed how, in the absence of music (or even sometimes with music), the rhythm and dynamics of the dance is often based on the dancers' breathing. Anyone who has done Contact Improv knows what a transformative journey it can be for one's own psyche, i.e. you end up learning a lot about yourself; in fact one of the fundamental principles of the form is to "take responsibility for your own weight" which is very metaphorical in one's everyday life and interactions with others. Many times during classes of this form the instructor catches a dancer holding their breath during a lift or other more complex movement and exclaims: "Remember to breathe" or simply "Just Breathe," which has always been metaphorical to me when dealing with everyday life stresses. So this song by Rachel really encapsulates this concept in a very beautiful way, and it really resonated with me. Wonderfully written and performed.
"Just Breathe"
by Rachel Fuller
(1)
I hear you say
nothing's OK
it's harder each day
just to chase your fears away
it feels like a dream
(2)
the panic will pass
these things never last
we'll get a new cast
and rewrite every part
and every scene
(chorus)
and when I believe
that we should just breathe
and then I believe
that we will just be
Just breathe
and let yourself feel
(3)
divided you stand
united you stall
that's how it works
but it makes no sense at all
whenever you fall
(4)
take every cliche
that sad people say
the books on your shelf
that tell you how to live your day
and throw them away
(chorus)
and when I believe
that we should just breathe
and then I believe
that we will just be
(bridge)
and if it feels that you are tumbling down
just hold on
there is a chance if you can believe
all will be well if you breathe
(Verse 1)
(verse 2)
(chorus)
and when I believe
that we should just breathe
and then I believe
that we will just be
just breathe
We're alive and breathe free
we can touch an feel
and so I believe
that we should just breathe
